Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about tallow? You’re not alone! Whether you’re new to tallow-based products or already love them, we want you to feel confident about what you’re using. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often about Farmhouse Tallow.
What is tallow?
Tallow is rendered animal fat that has been carefully purified and traditionally used in soaps, balms, moisturizers, and other household products. At Farmhouse Tallow, we transform tallow into simple, handcrafted products for your everyday routine.
Where does your tallow come from?
Our tallow comes from pasture-raised beef and lamb, connecting our products directly to our agricultural roots. Farmhouse Tallow was created with the idea of making purposeful use of a valuable agricultural resource that might otherwise go unused.
What is the difference between beef tallow and lamb tallow?
Both are traditional animal-based fats, but they have slightly different natural characteristics. Beef tallow creates a rich, nourishing balm, while lamb tallow offers another unique option for customers who enjoy traditional, animal-based skincare. We proudly offer products made with both.
Are your products made in small batches?
Yes! Small-batch production allows us to give careful attention to each product we make.
What does “herbal infused” mean?
For many of our specialty tallows, dried botanicals are infused directly into the tallow. This traditional process allows the characteristics of the selected herbs and botanicals to become part of the finished product.
Are your products naturally scented?
Many of our products receive their scent from the ingredients used to create them, including botanical infusions and essential oils. Some specialty products may contain additional fragrance ingredients. Check the individual product description and ingredient list for details.
Why does my tallow look or feel slightly different from my last jar?
That’s part of the beauty of a handcrafted product. Because we work in small batches with naturally derived ingredients, you may notice slight variations in color, texture, aroma, or consistency from one batch to another.
Will my tallow melt?
Tallow can soften or melt when exposed to warmer temperatures. This does not necessarily mean the product is damaged. If your tallow becomes soft during shipping or while sitting somewhere warm, place it in a cool location and allow it to firm again.
How should I store my tallow products?
Keep your tallow in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Always close the container after use and avoid introducing water into the product.
How much tallow should I use?
A little goes a long way! Start with a small amount and add more if needed. For skin products, gently warm the tallow between your fingers or palms before applying.
Are all Farmhouse Tallow products the same?
No. We offer a variety of products created for different uses. Our collection includes traditional beef and lamb tallows, whipped tallows, botanical-infused specialty products, lip balms, and other tallow-based goods. Always review the individual product description and ingredient list before use.
What if I have sensitive skin or allergies?
Always review the complete ingredient list before using a product. If you have sensitive skin or known allergies, consider testing a small amount on a limited area first. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Can I use your tallow products on my face?
Some Farmhouse Tallow products are specifically created with facial use in mind, while others are intended for general skin application. Check the individual product description for its intended use and directions.
Do you test on animals?
Our products are handcrafted for people and are not tested on animals.
Are Farmhouse Tallow products intended to treat medical conditions?
No. Farmhouse Tallow products are cosmetic or personal-care products and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.
Do you accept returns?
Due to the personal-care nature of our products, all sales are final. If your order arrives damaged or there is a problem with your order, please contact us so we can review the situation.
Where is Farmhouse Tallow located?
Farmhouse Tallow is located in Casstown, Ohio, where our products are handcrafted in small batches and rooted in our family's agricultural background.

Tallow-based goods. Simple ingredients. Rooted in tradition.
Farmhouse Tallow grew from a combination of agriculture, education,
family, and a desire to make better use of the resources produced on the farm.
I am an agriculture educator, and my husband is a farmer. Together, our
family raises corn, soybeans, and hay, along with cattle and sheep.
Agriculture has always been a family effort for us. Our two children grew up as
part of the operation and continue to pitch in whenever they are home from
college.
The idea for Farmhouse Tallow actually began in the classroom. While
teaching Meat Science, I became increasingly aware of how much fat from
an animal carcass can be discarded or underutilized. I began wondering how we
could put more of that resource to good use rather than letting it go to waste.
That curiosity led me to tallow.
I started small, rendering tallow and experimenting with simple lotions
and balms for our family and friends. What began as a way to use more of the
animal and create something useful quickly grew as friends and family began
asking for more.
Eventually, that little project made its way to our
farmhouse kitchen, and into Farmhouse Tallow.
Today, Farmhouse Tallow is about more than skincare. It is about creating
tallow-based goods with simple ingredients that are rooted in agriculture
and tradition. Each product reflects where we came from—a working farm, an
agricultural family, and the belief that the resources we raise should be
valued and used with purpose.
